Understanding Deep Vein Thrombosis

In essence, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in one of the veins of the thighs or pelvis. This condition is dangerous because the clot in the leg may easily become dislodged and travel to other parts of the body. If the clot travels to a person's lungs, the condition is called pulmonary embolism, and it is often fatal.

If you were at high risk for DVT after a stroke, for instance, but the medical professionals at the hospital failed to watch for and take action to avoid this condition, your injuries may be considered a result of medical malpractice. At Anderson Law Offices, our Cleveland deep vein thrombosis lawyers are highly experienced at handling cases of medical negligence and in helping obtain full and fair compensation for the victims and their families.

Causes of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Patients are generally at greater risk for developing DVT when:

  • They have recently been immobilized in the hospital or at home
  • They have recently had surgery
  • They are significantly overweight or use tobacco
  • They have an infection
  • They are taking contraceptives with estrogen
  • They take frequent plane flights
  • They have thrombophilia (tendency to develop blood clots)

Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis

This condition can occur either with or without symptoms. If you do experience any of the following symptoms, however, it may be a sign of DVT:

  • Extreme leg pain
  • Calf tenderness
  • Leg swelling
  • Warmth and redness
  • Bluish discoloration
  • Discomfort from elevating the leg
